The new station will finally open, following years of delays. As the article says, usual Jersey stuff. Amtrak had a million little changes. The PA chief almost went to jail.

The station will cost $250 million. A quarter of a billion dollars sounds like a lot of money for a 10 car long platform.

It is NY/NJ where anything in construction costs five times its normal cost.  Lots of union overtime; favorable padded contracts to the chosen construction companies with political clout; and, of course, massive cost "over-runs"

The $250 million was reprogrammed ARC project money of the PA's share. None of the rest of it went to a rail project. 

That's an obscene amount considering the scope. WMATA's new "infill" station at Potomac Yard in Alexandria is currently budgeted to cost $268 million. Part of it will be funded by developer contributions and a special tax district.

The real estate that is going up in Harrison is amazing. But it seems it gets zero developer and municipal funding from enhanced property tax revenue.
The new Element Hotel right next to the PATH Harrison station usually has higher rates than the Newark Gateway Hilton.

I haven't stayed at Element yet.  But the Newark Penn Hilton gateway is a tired property.  Seriously in a need of a deep renovation.  Convenient, but older.

I stay at the Hilton about 12 years ago and about 4 years ago I thought it was very nice not needing anything.
