FL boy bikes around gates, is killed
Author: Lackawanna484

Lake Worth, Amtrak. Kid on a bicycle ignores gates and lights. Doesn't end well.

Mayor suggests better safety education.

With street intersections, Red Light Flashing means the same as Stop sign, so make sort of a stop, and proceed.
I don't think some view railroad crossings as any different as long as they can get around the gate.

When will this insanity end? Mass shootings are insanity too but cars and pedestrians vs trains are SELF induced insanity. As soon as my daughter is old enough to understand a talk about train crossings and tracks are in order.

I grew up on the LIRR Far Rockaway Branch. I simply intuitively knew enough before I knew how to read not to cross a red signalled grade-crossing, road, or pedestrian-only, and stay away from the 3rd rail.
I had other silly ideas, i.e. I thought the boxy H2C couplers on NYTCA subway trains were huge magnets that held the cars together, but at least I knew dangerous from safe.

I am sure the parents will sue the Evil Train for running their child over. And win

Only when society takes it upon itself to stand up and start taking personal responsibly for one's own actions.

Maybe, maybe not.

FL is less crazy than some places in the jackpot justice. The people who saw the kid, stop, look, listen and then proceed were horrified.

One would think you would spell a simple word like can't before calling anyone else stupid......

It is sad to see the usual snarky comments here about a dead CHILD.  I know I did a lot of dumb stuff when I was 17, I don't remember many kids that didn't do their share of stupid stuff.  I guess the few perfect ones all joined Train Orders when they got older.

Yes, you can.

This one is fixed, now...

Probably 90 percent ride on the wrong side of the street in SoCal. Often on the sidewalk on the wrong side. They think it's safer, it's how they were taught. Our police chief took grief from the city council after trying to implement an educational program which included riding on the right side. Council said he was trying to challenge cultral norms...etc. Make sure you are insured, and look both ways twice. Including down the sidewalk before making a turn.

I thought I was the only one... Rosedale, 1950s, where the tracks were fortunately elevated.

Perhaps you can send these heartfelt sentiments to the parents.

Of course, we all on TO know that you NEVER did anything stupid as a teen. Right?

They may sue that's true but there will be no "winner" as such. The railroad will settle for an undisclosed sum that places no blame, for in the end that's cheaper than litigation that while you may certainly win the cost would be exhorbitant. We as rails can't win this fight no matter how we try to educate....without total grade separation people will continue to die. That's just how it is.

Stuff like this was drilled into us in elementary school.  Slogans with signs in prominent places in school like
"walk left, ride right"  "wear light after dark".  It worked for us, but I guess schools don't do that anymore?

I don't know about Tri-Rail, but BrightLine has had several suits dismissed.

The combination of forward facing cameras, surveillance on some crossings, dash cam video on other vehicles, etc is a powerful opponent.

Doesn't help with the trauma endured by the train crew, however.

Really stupid comment...what if this was your kid?  Unreal.

ATSF 3751 Correct that we have all done foolish things at 17, including myself but most people and kids have enough common sense to not go around lowered railroad crossing gates. I'll say it again, he won't do that again!
