Gene, thanks for the details. Date: 11/20/18 15:54 Re: Next Amtrak bid list: equipment offered for sale Author: jp1822 NO! This is a NEW list and VERY interesting to see. Since 2007 or so Amtrak has been holding onto a "surplus" of Heritage Diners (or more Heritage Diners than what they were needing for the East Coast LD ovenrnight trains) AND former Heritage 10-6 Sleepers used as Dorm cars on the single level overnight LD routes. Amtrak began withdrawing the Heritage Dorm cars in roughly 2007 and even targeting the Heritage Diners at that point. This was round 1 of the Lake Shore losing its Heritage [full service] Diner and the crew being assigned in-line revenue space on the Viewliner Sleeper, as opposed to their own crew space in the Heritage 10-6 Crew Car that had since been converted in the late 1990s as Viewliners were rolled out. This was also AMtrak's first round of all out war with trying to get rid of any Heritage equipment. This also led to the creation of the Amfleet Diner Lite Car (potential replacement for the Heritage Diners) and Superliner I Diner conversion into the Cross Country Cafe. The Superliner Sightseer Cars were also targeted for re-design so it could potentially serve as both diner/lounge on routes as necessary.
- The Superliner Cross County Cafe was launched - but not to full design or operating plans as originally laid out. - The Superliner Sightseer Lounge only received a few tables on one end and nothing more (thank God!). One plan had them heading off for storage and replaced by a single Cross Country Cafe Car (to save operating $). - The Amfleet II Cafes were created to Diner Lite cars )horrible interior layout) and put into operation on the Cardinal and Lake Shore, but eventally the Heritage Diner was resurrected on the Lake Shore due to the Diner Lite not being able to sustain peak period operations. Eventually they pulled it again, and then Amtrak pulled the Silver Star's Heritage Diners right before the Viewliner II Diners began to be delivered. - The Heritage Crew Cars began to be withdrawn (and all were) - two were fully refurbished though for the business fleet though! It was said that Amtrak wanted to sell the Heritage Diners (and even the Heritage Crew Cars - former Heritage 10-6 sleepers) for scrap so that they wouldn't end up into private car owners' hands since Amtrak wanted to avoid running them at all. Not sure how the private car owner world views these cars anymore with Amtrak's recent hostility towards private cars. Now we see them all for sale, and even the Hi-Level coaches that were refurbished to launch the Kentucky Cardinal and Heartland Flyer. I could see VIA interested in buying some of the Heritage Diners and even Heritage Crew Cars (converting back to sleepers) for their nostalgic purposes of operating the Canadian and even expansion should VIA look toward that path down the line (and if the price is right perhaps). So after all the years of storing these Heritage cars (diners and sleepers) - they now go up for sale! Gunn commented that he thought the Heritage Sleepers (referring to the Crew Cars) were better built than the VIewliner Sleepers. He was not a fan of those cars, especailly after the Viewliner froze up in the winter of 2003 or so! Amtrak even refurbed two of these cars back into service.....with retention tanks that originally led to their sidelining! Anderson is REALLY cleaning house now!!! 69440 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > glendale Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Already posted earlier: > > > > > https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4, > > > The complete list was not posted earlier. Date: 11/20/18 16:33 Re: Next Amtrak bid list: equipment offered for sale Author: njmidland In reality, what private car owner would want a diner? That is a lot of cost to tag along with sleepers, domes, business cars, etc. Most PV operators have made modifications to their cars to handle food service. If anyone is going to want a Heritage diner, it would be for a tourist train operation. Unlike the dinner trains that were popular 20+ years ago, the model now seems to be having a diner as one of many options on a tourist train operation. TVRM and Conway Scenic do this and it appears to be very popular. Let's face it, the way things are going a tourist/museum railroad offering traditional dining car service may be the only place you can go to experience traditional dining car service.

A tidbit from railcarphotos.com: "Former mechanical reefer built by Pacific Car & Foundry 4-70, rebuilt 3-02 by Ebenezer Railcar for Amtrak Express Service." Trying to think of who had mechanical reefers with 10-12 foot doors . . . MILW or PFE? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/20/18 17:07 by CPR_4000. To the best of my knowledge it was still in active service up to the time they were all retired. It is one of the former North Coast Limited cars. Anyone have information?

The New Haven ran a grill diner between New York and Boston on some of their trains. One difference I remember is that there was counter seating in a grill diner, in addition to table seating. I would have thought they would use baggage cars instead. Of course they could be thinking that since they have to run something anyway they might as well use the diners, open them up and thus provide overflow seating or else just a nice place to sit and work on your laptop. ------------------------------------------------------- > I guess those two were the cream of the crop. No, they were just amongst the cars that happened to be sitting around Chicago after being taken out of service, when the need arose for extra signal activation cars. They run them until the COT&S expires. They've even been using new Viewliner diners for those chores. Date: 11/21/18 07:54 Re: Next Amtrak bid list: equipment offered for sale Author: swirsk53 I think the so called Grill Diners are former New York Central Budd built cars that may originally have been deemed the equivalent of diner lounge cars. Full car (other than kitchen and galley area) were set for table service but with banquettes at one end as opposed to tables for 4 at the diner end. The summer of 1972 or 1973, when I worked for an Amtrak vendor escorting tour groups from NY Penn to Disney World (Kissimmee station) I recall these cars along with SP Pride of Texas coffee shops (similar interior arrangement) being used along with SCL and SP Audobon diners on the Champions. Champions typically had 2 diners in that period, both with the same menu and service. This was pre-HEP.
