The Eagle was supposed to depart at 1:45 pm and the Chief at 2:50 pm. Chicago Status board now showing they are "boarding."
The Lake Shore, normally scheduled to leave at 9:30 pm is still boarding passengers as of 10:25 pm

"Better late than never."

Something odd is happening. Status board now showing  Eagle and Chief as "overdue." Is it possible theymay not depart tonight after all ?

As of 10:44 pm CHI time even the Lake Shore is now shown as being overdue. If the trains will actually leave tonight I pity the poor passengers dealing with the uncertain status of the trains.

So if the trains don't get out - Amtrak's now got more passengers to re-accomodate. Normally Amtrak could round up an additional sleeper and coach for the Eagle and Chief if they needed to, but the Lake Shore - if it doesn't get out today and all passengers bumped - they'll only have Amfleet 2 coaches. No extra Viewliner sleepers are kept at Chicago. Course if Amtrak had to, combine Cardinal and Lake Shore consists to one Lake Shore mega consists and operate the Cardinal as a Superliner train to Washington DC only. Whatever western long distance train makes it to Chicago first gets turned to become the eastbound Cardinal.

This is not good!

#3 supposedly left at 248a, almost 12 hours late.  It's not showing up on the tracking software though.
Maybe they didn't program it before departure, or possibly there is a freight unit on the point.  Not sure.

A question I posted in a different thread on Jan.30th about the announcement that Amtrak would not be operating any Chicago trains
for two days:

"So given Amtrak's state of good repair that makes it difficult to get a train from point A to point B
when 70 degrees and sunny, how many trains do you think would have operated today
if they had tried."

Now we know the answer to that question.

In the amount of time No. 3 was delayed getting out, passengers could have flown to LA and back!  While this year's cold was more extreme than in recent  years, these type of delays and service disruptions seem to happen in Chicago every year. Like they have never had winter there before. But according to some, with advanced climate change it will all be over in 12 years anyway so we won't have to worry about it.

Melting polar glaciers and tundra are causing more cold weather events in North America and Europe.  The rapid warming at the poles, a clear and distinct sign of rapid climate change, is why we're getting hammered with cold down south.

Watch any explanation of the polar vortex phenomenon on any local TV weathercast and you will find the facts.

Estimated arrival time of 48 at Albany is 5 hrs. late at 7:31 pm. ETA NYP 10:13 pm( 3 hrs., 50 mins. late).
If 448 actually runs it looks like passengers will arrive Boston  around 1 am . No subway service at that hour. I wonder if bus service would be substituted....would be faster.

Good luck trying to make up that amount of time. It's doable on some days, but I don't think this is one if them.........
