Not a good day on the Surfline (2/2/19)
Author: SCspotter

Today has been anything but a good day on the entire route from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. First, southbound Surfliner #562 hit a tresspasser in Carlsbad. That shut down the line and haulted all trains for several hours. Later, much further north near Ventura, CA, the tracks have been shutdown due to storm damage. No trains can move north of LA. And now, the same thing happened at the Del Mar Bluffs. More storm damage there has shut down the line for a second time in a matter of a few hours. So basically, no Surfliner trains or the Coast Starlight can run today. Trains are stopped and stranded all over the Surfline route from San Diego to about Santa Barbara.

I posted a few pictures of the washout at the Faria Beach curve in the Calrailfans group on Facebook. Check there if you’re interested.

I would post them here, but TO does not play nicely with iPhone pictures, so that’s that.

Metrolink is running N of LAX, but some problems.

FYI Coaster service alerts (clear at this time):

Not seeing why Surfliners can't operate SAN-LAX with modified schedules, terminating at LAX or short of the slide.

That was the third tresspasser incident . It was Metrolink  684 on Wendesday, Pacific Surfliner 583 on Thursday and Pacific Surfliner 1564 today. They always come in three.

Not three this week but four.
AV 216 kill a lady just after leaving the station in lancaster Tuesday. This tied up the line for 3+1/2 hours and canceled trains.

Del Mar bluffs again.  Uh-oh.
Is Saturday still the off night for the incoming Barstow to San Diego freight? Or only passenger affected for now?

My wife and I found ourselves in the middle of the Surfliner mess this morning.  We had tickets to take Surfliner 1573 from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano, leaving at 10:51am.  When we arrived they were announcing that 1573’s departure was delayed due to a trespasser incident involving a southbound train at Oceanside. At the ticket counter they were telling passengers that the train would be delayed at least 2 hours.  Shortly after noon a Coaster arrived from Oceanside and was followed about ten minutes later by the first of two Surfliners caught behind the incident.  About 12:25p we were asked to line up at the gate.  At 12:45p there was an announcement asking passsengers going north of Los Angeles -train 777 - to come to the baggage area and pick up their checked luggage (no other explanation).  It was now after 1:00p, it was apparent that the first Surfliner had been cleaned and still no movement for boarding.  The waiting line now was probably more than 200 people - some for 1573 and others for the following train.  Then it happened: about 1:25p it was announced that all northbound service was cancelled and refunds could be had at the ticket counter.

Later, when we walked by the station at 5:00p they were announcing that passengers should go to the gate for the next train; apparently the line was now open at Del Mar.

HSR would serve few if any of the Surfliner stations.

Trying going Oceanside to San Juan Cap on a HSR.   Or Burbank to  Irvine.
