Maybe In 30 Years This Will Seem Historic
Author: walstib

Thirty years from now someone may look at this photo and say "ohhh, that's the last of the Surfliner F59 locomotives running in Southern California."

But yesterday, standing in the rain near Somis, train 1767 didn't feel particularly historic, especially given that the sun was shining here 10 minutes before the train arrived.

Great pic! Hopefully we'll all still have digital photos in 30 years and they won't have been wiped out thanks to viruses or other stuff.

It will be considered historic in 30 years - that's the meaning of "historic."

And what differentiates F59PHi pictures taken this past week or this past month from the ones taken ten years ago?

Other than this particular locomotive’s likely standing as the last of its class to serve in Surfliner service, no, I don’t think there is any difference from a picture taken 10 years ago.

Sort of like the last of Southern Pacific’s 3200s to pull a Peninsula commute.

Can’t believe they are almost gone and the Surfliners, they were my favorite passenger engine (ok, that I saw in regular service).  Liked their paint even better the the Amtrak California ones I rode behind and saw in Northern California. I’m not old enough to think that these are going to be historic someday.  But then again, my kids say I’m really old since I was born in the 1900’s!

Looks like the 459 is also still running on the Surfline - at least as of yesterday (2/11):

It will grow sweeter in historicalness in time. Part of the hard thing about documenting the last days of stuff is that it looks the same as its always looked for years but when people post photos of the last years of a branch or a customer or something, they always have a special historic charge.
