Green Book NY subway shot
Author: symph1

Early in the movie Green Book, there's a shot that's supposedly in the Bronx. In the background, we see a stainless steel el go by. The scene supposedly took place in 1962. Were silver-sided cars already used in NY in '62?

Great movie - highly recommended.

The director was probably not even aware that El cars looked different over the years.  Small background anachronisms like that are not unusual in movies and TV.

Note the filming locations for Green Book.......from Internet Movie Data Base (imdb.com)

With the exception of the Carnegie Hall exterior shots, the entire film was shot in Lousiana, mostly likely for tax rebate reasons.

That can't be right. The scene is question is clearly an urban exterior, a very busy city street. There is certainly an el train in the background. Whether it's the Bronx or not is an open question, but there's no doubt of the el.

If it was just an exterior to set the location, cuda been stock footage.

The first stainless steel cars in NYC would have been the BMT Zephyr in 1934. The first large order would have been the R32 in 1964. The first to hit the Bronx would be the R62 in 1983.

Chicago wouldn't get Stainless steel until 1969 or so with the 2200s. Philly's Almond Joys were older, but weren't fully stainless in appearance.

Having grown up on the El, I'm curious what you mean.
