An extraordinary winter storm will cause wind gusts to near 90 mph and record low barometric pressures over a large area of the Central U.S. on Wednesday. In addition, a severe blizzard will occur over parts of the High Plains. This may cause disruptions to the Chief and Zephyr.

Don't know where "here" happens to be. The portion of #5 and #6's route between Winter Park and McCook will be exposed to severe blizzard conditions and likely power failures.

Certainly east of Denver

The temperature averages may not be changing much, but we certainly seem to be seeing a lot of extreme weather.  In both directions. Several recent all time high temperatures, several recent record snow falls and droughts, even Tornado Alley is on the move eastward.   More tornados in Alabama, fewer tornados in Oklahoma.

Actually, that seems to be part of a cyclical shift in areas most likely to experience strong tornadoes first identified by the late Dr. Ted Fujita in the 1970's. There is nothing new about the shift.

Based on the TV interviewing, the locals in Alabama weren't aware of  Dr Fujita's research.  They may have an interest in learning more.

West of Denver too, north and south... Laramie, Winter Park, Araoahoe Basin all are under a Winter Storm warning, Wednesday into Thursday morning.

Actually, I took a time out from Trainorders and, when I returned, I would not get my Kansas1 back for some reason. So, I am now MSE.

Logical meteorological follow-up to the large vorticity rainstorms in California over the weekend.  Today was the first dry day in the SF Bay Area this month.  Halleluah!

Tuesday morning forecast for Kearney -- Holdrege -- Grand Island NE  is for  1-2" of rain from Tuesday night thru Thursday noon.     Maybe snow on the tail end of the time frame and most of that NW of our area.    Lots of wind and some local flooding possible along the river bottoms.     This certainly could effect 5 and 6, or they can skate right thru.     I see more of a snow job West of McCook NE to Fort Morgan.     So who knows ?    The Shadow knows

Yesterday, there was a strong low pressure cyclone centered just south of San Diego, CA, sucking up much moisture from the Pacific Ocean. It is slowly moving north east in direction. Any mountian range in SoCal that is highter that 5,000 will have accumilated greater than 12" of snow by this afternoon. A high pressure troft will build right behind the departure of the low pressure cyclone. By the time this low pressure cyclone is above Texas, it will draw up moisture from the gulf. I won't be surprised if some tornados will spawn from this system as it meets cold artic air from the jet stream.

Well, we certainly didnt have the weather terrorists to hype every weather event 40 years ago like they do now. Yes, Mother Nature can be dangerous and life threatening and it's good to be prepared, but we had frequent severe weather before before any of us were born.
Do you think a person in PA in 1970 would know about or even care about a blizzard in western NE?? No way. Now, we'll know every car crash and uprooted tree that occurs in this storm if we watch enough media. That's fine, if that is what you want to watch, but it doesn't mean we have more severe weather now than back then. Good grief.

I was living in western Pennsylvania in the winter of 1970-1971, and the prior winter.  It got cold, as it always does.  Snowed a lot, and lots of drizzly, gloomy days.

Don't recall that I heard much about about Nebraska, but I did hear a lot about Viet Nam. Hot, rainy, and occasional monsoons.  Heard more about Viet Nam weather than Nebraska weather

I'm on the zephyr now leaving MTZ and my attendant thinks they're going all the way to Chicago
