Late Amtrak 58 at Carbondale, IL
Author: bodkin6071

Eight hour and 17 minute late Amtrak #58 leaves Carbondale, IL On April 14.

f I had only been here about 1 minute earlier this shot would have been better (dang traffic lights), but I think this is even better IMHO...

What was #58's delay this day? Weather down south, my guess.

Conductor on today’s 58 said that weather indeed caused the delays.

Thank you, I think it came out excellent for a quick "grab shot". I had considered deleting it at first (I can be my own worst critic), then looked at it some more and thought "this has potential" and kept it.

The brick streets, the trees blooming out, the flowers blooming, the vintage buildings....with Amtrak in the distant background set it up well.

Your photo pulls you right into the scene — lots of elements, here— and shows that a grab shot can be a lot more in the end. It also brought back a fine Carbondale memory of walking the streets there w/ my nephew Drew during our short layover after riding an ICRHA Special down the former “Mainline of Mid-America” a couple years back — thanks for the great start to my day!

First a tornado crossed the tracks, causing around a three hour delay.  Then, after the train finally got underway, a wind storm brought a slew of trees down across the right-of-way for another multi-hour delay.  Then, U.P. had a freight train break down across CN Junction in Memphis... and their crew went dead on the hours of service (new crew called out of Marion, AR).

When it rains, it pours.
