Not for nothing, but by the late 1990s, early 2000's I really throught NJT had a bright future ahead. Even seeing Jeff Warsh's pie in the sky expansion plans gave some hope of how far NJT could go and create a better state with travel interconnectivity. NJT just needed the funding and dedicated leadership. In the mean time, NJ Transit had built itself from the ashes of so many private railroads that had declared bankruptcy or folded in the 1970s. It achieved various operating efficiiencies. Improvements in the 1980s and 1990s  rainged from station improvements, to figuring out how to merge all the commuter lines from various RR's into ONE cohesive system, to track and catenary improvements, to new and reliable equipment. by the early 2000's things were starting to look half way descent. Even the old comet cars were getting refreshed. 

Now NJT Rail is just a complete mess and it's going to take a lot to get out of this hole it has fallen in. The "old-timers" are gone.    

That's what happens when what is supposed to be a transportation service instead becomes a politically-motivated social program.

Amtrak, take note.

NJT now reminds me of LIRR circa-1969. It took a couple of years to see noticeable improvements. 

I thought they've graduated two engineer classes in the past three months.

They have, but this is staying barely ahead of retirements.
