Panic ensued inside Union Station late Sunday afternoon when apparent fireworks caused a shooting scare that sent people running, D.C. authorities say.

Police and fire officials said there was no shooter or gunfire and believe someone set off fireworks.

Given the homicide rate in our nation's capital, it's no wonder folks panicked. What a national disgrace.

The rate is high, yes, but it's not as high as St Louis, Baltimore, New Orleans, Detroit, and some others. 

Is that supposed to make us feel better?

The cities per se aren't the problem, it's the large number of uncivilized* people who inhabit them.

It's possible to have safe large cities- like eastern Europe and northern & eastern Asia.  Check out a number of recent threads on the International & European boards...

Demographics is destiny.


* Civilized: "At an advanced stage of social and cultural development" "Polite and well-mannered".
 

This has nothing to do with "uncivilzed" people in urban areas. Hearing such sounds in a terminal and public area has many people thinking it is a terrorist attack.

It has everything to do with being civilized. No quote marks because civilized behavior is a real thing.  In a civilized society, people do not set off fireworks in crowded passenger stations.

With the number of murders and other violent crimes (many by guns) in Washington, St Louis, Baltimore, New Orleans, Detroit, etc. most people probably thought it was gunshots.

The central areas of cities are for the most part, uncivilized and dangerous compared to eastern Europe & eastern & north Asia.

It doesn't have to be that way, but it is.
