I wonder how many near misses there are on Caltrain these days with all the distracted pedestrians that didn't exist the last time I ran a commute back in September 2004?  It amazes me they don't get three or four every single day.

That’s an accurate statement, JV... Also, the sheer population density has grown so much in 15 years, and the highways and railways are nuts now here in CA... Too many fatals on both now due to pure recklessness, distraction, impairment and indifference/hostility to self and others.
Spent a couple years on the Capitols for a “so-called” break for me which ended up as “blood alley” with no end in sight... Glad to get off those high blood pressure runs and that awful Ric-SJC corridor now. Looking forward to the retired life far away from all of this, indeed.

Do we ever hear from the maintenance folks who have to give these units
their mandatory 90 day inspections, which includes their undercarriage ? Are there any additional
hazmat precautions they have to take or is it all in days work at that point?

I see many people, both walking and driving, looking at their phones and ignoing the surroundings. Not uncommon to be sitting at a light that turns green and the person in front of you dosen't notice

People stop on the tracks, head down into the phone. Their mind is in a different place, a virtual place. A collision will snap them back into reality if only for a fraction of a second.

Correct! The same thing happens to me at our local grocery store, as most of these younger women/mothers are pushing their grocery cart while buried in their damned smart phone. One of these days, after being run-into, I'm going to say, "PLEASE, hang-up and drive!".

I have often wondered if there will come a day when cell phone service is disabled (expect for 911 calls} when one is in a moving car.

That would / should be a quick study, if you're a passenger what's the problem with talking on the phone or using a data link, perhaps a traffic or navigation Ap? Many co-workers who Car-pool dial in to late afternoon and/or early morning meetings.

That hasn't stopped people from driving drunk, and now, driving while potted...
