Anderson and Amtrak must need some money, FAST.
Author: GenePoon

Starting Friday, August 16 and running through Saturday, you can book tickets for half off for
travel during the month of September, with no blackout dates, including Labor Day weekend.

He is trying to do something by Oct 1, maybe have ridership outpace revenue, or test for demand elasticity.

As a federal enterprise, does Amtrak's reporting calendar follow the federal October 1 - September 30 schedule?  Get money in the door before the reporting period ends...

If you downgrade a product far enough, eventually people stop buying it and you have to slash the price.

This is from an outfit that has sleeper car sales in June, and on Autotrain during their busier winter season. They are either very devious or very stupid.

Isn't that the truth? You just know it's one or the other. Talk about total lack of trust!!!

I’d say they’re both devious and very stupid.  I still don’t give Anderson credit for Delta either, without rehashing it in depth again remember that bankruptcies both at Delta and NWA along with record low oil prices happened during his tenure helping him immensely.

After seeing how he’s handled the helm at Amtrak, questionable decision after questionable decision then getting in  shouting matches during business meetings with stakeholders he’s definitely shown he’s no managerial genius. The shouting match with  Senators should have been grounds for termination by the Board.

Other than Mr Gardner, it might be tough to replace Richard Anderson.  What qualified person would even want the job?  Wick Moorman, who was eminently qualified, threw up his hands in how many months?

Complicated, deeply distrustful, many stake holders in Congress would put the stake through the business.  Maybe McClinock or Mulvaney would take the CEO role?

One of the issues with Wick is that his wife wanted him out. With regard to today's situation I wonder what would happen if they were subjected to serious audit. Would that cause the house to be cleaned?

Touché on that. I don’t disagree at all at this point in time. After the elections and a new Secretary of Transportation is in place hopefully heads will roll at Amtrak and the Board. In a country with 300,000,000 citizens someone qualified will turn up and if not look to Canada or Europe, Gunn was a Canadian. We have the people here I’m convinced, under Chao it’s a loosing proposition though.

Anderson resigned as CEO of Northwest Airlines in 2004, well before it filed for bankruptcy in September 2005.  He was hired as CEO of Delta Air Lines in 2007 AFTER that airline emerged from bankruptcy protection.  The CEO of Delta while it was in Chapter 11 was Gerald Grinstein (former CEO of Burlington Northern).  Throw darts at Anderson if you want to, but the facts are very clear that over the 10 years he was at the helm of Delta, he oversaw one of the most successful mergers in airline history (Delta + Northwest) and through his leadership and that of his executive team (along with the Delta employees) turned the airline into an industry powerhouse that continues today.

Just booked Orlando to Toledo, OH. Fares were the same as yesterday. But still a reasonable $555 for roomettes on both trains and for one last time, including an actual eatable diner on the Meteor. Diner on the second night will be at on of Union Station's many restaurants prior to boarding No.29 and it's "contemporary dining" garbage.

By many accounts, Richard Anderson was pretty hard nosed in his negotiations with Northwest and Delta employees.  He demanded much, and got a lot done.

Anderson is one of the most qualified CEOs in Amtrak’s history, next to Graham Claytor. Claytor was well respected on the hill and was able to navigate those halls while re-equipping most of the fleet. Anderson has brought a true business approach to Amtrak, like it or not. Amtrak is on course to eliminate all operating subsidies in the next fiscal year, something no one has been able to achieve. If you want passenger rail to survive, he has laid out a clear course.

The vast majority of the others were political hacks with no business experience.

Oh stop. He doesn't know a thing about the rail passenger business, never worked in the industry, nor in the public sector, disparages the long distance network at every opportunity, hides metrics from his monthly reports, and can't get along with Congress, who funds him. He has gotten angry letters with many co-signers from both the Senate and House committees questioning his wisdom and suppressing revenues. He has no temperament to function in the public sector as Senator Moran would tell you.  All he wants to do is propose fake corridors to replace the national network that neither the Class I's will allow nor the states will fund.

Whether it is "operating" or "capital" is based on Amtrak's bogus accounting and fake cost allocations. Only Anderson and Tom Downs were stupid enough to take it seriously. Moorman didn't believe it; Claytor didn't believe it. OMB doesn't care; CBO doesn't care. It's all been refuted. It's all an Appropriation and it's still $1.5 Billion + Gateway. Much of the NEC "capital" funding is for maintenance, which in a real company is operating funds. There will be no shangri-la when his bogus operating cost recovery goes from the current 92% to 100% because everybody knows it bogus.

The only reason he and Gardner are still there is because they are protected by the Board of Hacks, and Grand Puba Coscia is from the corrupt Port Authority.

You made my point, Anderson resigned from NWA he wasn’t the person to turn them around and they filed bankruptcy shortly after his tenure as CEO. He was out of the airline industry completely during the industry’s hardest years ( at United Healthcare). He took over Delta after they emerged from bankruptcy having shed pensions and renegotiated leases on aircraft. His last few years at Delta  we saw the lowest oil prices in recent memory. Regardless as Lackawanna alluded too earlier we’re lucky we don’t have someone like Mulvaney as Amtrak’s CEO.

Your posts are so delusional that it makes me think you’re either Gardner or Anderson self congratulating, especially now that you have employees, Congress, and rail fans all turned against you.

If you're a venture Capitalist,  what are u doing wading in the public sector.   The public sector is about public service, not making money.

Every politician and SEIU worker will back you up on that, just ask them.

Trump, congress, dual citizen lawmakers- all 100 percent in just to be serviced by the public.

Why look at the TSA for best example. Salt of the earth!
