Beauty and the Beast - E8 meets SD70M
Author: NDHolmes

On my way from home in Colorado Springs to the BM&LP last Saturday, I spotted headlights on the SLRG just west of Fort Garland.  Turns out the SLRG was running a concert train that morning for a Tom Rush concert up at the summit.

Admittedly I haven't been down that way nearly as much as I used to, but this is the first time I've seen E8 #100 actually doing anything since it arrived back in February.  What was more surprising was its second motor - ex-CSX SD70M #4687, now PRLX of the same number.  Beauty and the beast indeed.  It and sister 4685 arrived on the SLRG in late June.  I didn't see 4685, but I did hear EOT blips on the east side near La Veta.  I suspect they sent it with the freight over the hill a few hours ahead of the passenger train.

#1 - Were there ever more beautiful lines on an American locomotive than the EMD E series?
#2 - Might pull just fine and probably more comfortable to run than the E, but definitely not going to win any beauty pageants.
#3 - Climbing east out of Fort Garland and headed for the pass.

Nice catch. Thanks for sharing. This is a fine train to ride.

The AC units on the first dome sure add something to the car's aesthetics.

They may not be pretty, but you try sitting in that dome under the Colorado sun without them! Those domes are like a giant solar kiln without lots and lots of AC.
