The people have, or about to have, spoken.

In a previous post on this topic, I stated that Phoenix's citizens voted twice to develop a light rail system.  I stand corrected.  Per the article at the beginning of this thread, they voted three times for light rail, prior to yesterday's vote.

Must be giving the NIMBYs and the usual anti-rail suspects fits. I'm overjoyed.

The Arizona Republic article linked in the first post mentioned that opposition to the light rail expansion was funded by a coalition of Koch-related interests, and by several neighborhood groups.

Sometimes the loudest voices don't represent the interests of the widest number of participants..

Sometimes money doesn't talk loud enough to defeat a person or program. We need more of that.

Methinks there is a machinery behind the deceased one to keep the legacy going.

What legacy, being blind and dumb about what a good transportation is and what it needs compared to the mind set from the 50s on where highways and airlines are the way to go and it only took 2 full decades to find out how bad those 2 modes got!

Good for them, enjoyed working on the Mesa Extension a few years ago.

The highway and oil lobbies are well-financed  which is why roads are very heavily subsidized. This is one reason why we are $22 trillion in debt.

well, not entirely. MAGA is adding plenty to the debt. Who knew tax cuts could not pay for themselves?

Water and oil created a lot of the southwestern US. Add in air conditioning and that's a wrap.

The "think"tanks will find other wealthy "philanthropists" to push their agenda. Meanwhile, transit proponents will have to wait until the media feeds them the next new villain. I don't remember the Koch brothers having any influence in appointing auto executives to cabinet positions (both political parties) in the 1950s and 1960s.

We've had discussions about the Phoenix light rail the past several years, and the elimination of 2 lanes of a 4 lane road (Central Ave.) to accomodate the system's expansion was the biggest sticking point, and Prop 105 (this topic) was driven by that.

The folks trying to protect Central Ave. made a huge tactical mistake, and here's an excerpt from the article:

At that point, the group hooked up with a number of conservatives who are ideologically opposed to light rail, and the movement morphed into a campaign to prevent light-rail expansions throughout the city.

Off topic, but I've seen other "grass roots" movements hijacked by bigger political organizations, and their original intent (and mission) was wrecked. This has happened to all (or "both") sides of the political spectrum. I laugh at the stupidity of it all.
