SEPTA Police yank service weapons after one goes off by itself
Author: GenePoon

After an incident in which a SEPTA Police officer's service weapon
discharged spontaneously while in its holster, SEPTA is removing all
of the guns from service.

There have been at least nine reported incidents of the Sig Sauer
P320 going off by itself, including one in which a Virginia officer
was struck in her own leg by a round fired from her holstered gun.

The SEPTA incident, which occurred while the officer was on routine
patrol in Suburban Station, is under investigation by Philadelphia Police.

SEPTA has ordered 350 Glock 17s to replace the Sigs. In the
months it will take for the new weapons to arrive, SEPTA officers
will be carrying Glocks borrowed from the Philadelphia Police Dept.

The Sig Sauer P320 was the subject of a recall of the military
version after the US Army demanded that Sig modify the weapon due to
this same deficiency.  The Army had replaced the Beretta M9
with the Sig but field testing in 2016 revealed the flaw.
However, Sig continued to sell the unmodified version to civilians
and to law enforcement agencies.

The Beretta M9, Sig Sauer P320 and Glock 17 are all 9mm
semi-automatic handguns.

Why do they keep a round chambered  while in the holsters?

Because if you need it you don't want to be wasting time chambering a round......

What kind of artillery do the local gangs carry?

A side arm is better than a pocket knife, but...

Not necessarily within 21 feet.

Wonder why they don't use a VERY good and reliable American made weapon, such as the Smith & Wesson M&P .40 cal.?

Agreed.  But if the other guy has body armor, an AR-15 and a high capacity magazine, neither the Glock nor the pen knife will help...

If the military and the Philly police both pulled the Sig from active use, I wonder why Septa decided to continue its use?

SIG also has a production facility in New Hampshire. The P320 can be chambered in 9x19 Parabellum (collaquially "9mm"), .357 SIG, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP.

There is no indication that Philadelphia PD ever had those SIG’s, probably didn’t. SIG’s are very popular weapons for law enforcement handguns. It costs a lot to switch weapons, new guns, holsters and then training on the new weapon. This is the worst possible scenario with a quick change out. They’ll have to rush through training as quick as possible.
