Passenger Trains > CalTrain single level cars

What was wrong with these? They seemed to get the job done.

No bike racks, hard seats.

Horse and buggies "got the job done", too...newer equipment is nice.

They got the job done then.  However, during the time the photo was taken:
1) SP also ran double deck cars on its commute trains
2) SP wanted to get out of the commuter rail business

Since the 1970s, ridership on the line has soared.  If it wasn't for double-deck cars, CalTrain's operating costs would be higher.

Nice photo, though.

I imagine the weight of those cars, which I once rode, wasn't very fuel efficient...

The Millennials would probably say they are old fashioned and ugly.  Like, Dude, these things are from my grandfather's era.

The late Joe Boardman told us passenger cars outlive their marketing value, long before they outlive their operating capability.

As a trainfan - I love 'um.

Went out of my way as a youth to ride one on the peninsula - once. 
Never expected within 10 years that I'd take the inaugural GCRY trip in 1989 in a freshly restored one (with plush seats).

Good that many are still around and in service.

Train 60.  Seems to me this used to be #140 bringing up the rear of the fleet back in SP times.  I always enjoyed running the 3207.  Not sure why, I just was always happy when it was assigned to my train.  Those old "subs" were heavy alright.  With their fricition journals and tread brakes, they didn't accelerate that quickly.

Don't argue about today's people being soft. There is no argument. 

And no cab cars with the Harrimans for push-pull operation.

Yup, I haven't seen a new automobile sold without air conditioning since -- you know what? I can't remember when. 

I have a 1990 YJ Jeep Wrangler without air conditioning.  I don't think it was sold as a daily driver commuter car though.
