Passenger Trains > Milepost in Gap, PA on Amtrak (former PRR) lineDate: 10/11/19 19:27 Milepost in Gap, PA on Amtrak (former PRR) line Author: OCtrainguy While heading out to Strasburg on Sept. 27th, my son and I made a brief stop in Gap, PA. While the Amtrak train we were hoping to catch on our way was running late, I noticed this milepost. It looks like the original PRR concrete one still stands and the '5' is newer. The '5' is confusing me. Can someone help out and shed some light on this?

Sad to see this "Main Line" reduced from four to three and as seen, two tracks, but that's sufficient even for the all-electric high speed passenger service that now exists on the former "Broadway!" The Line has minimal freight traffic compared to "what was" during the PRR days. The Line is also a nice success story - how far it has come from the 1990s to present. Even in 2000, diesel service still reigned, the service was relatively slow and rough riding, bare bones frequencies, a cluttered ROW, etc. Restored nicely now to all-electric passenger service, with restored stations and high level platforms coming online slowly but surely! Don't forget that in PRR days, that section of line already had minimal through freight traffic because the Atglen and Susquehanna Low Grade was the preferred route. Only the mail and TOFC trains were likely to go that way.
