Viewliner II diner question (probably question # 1,200)
Author: edgy14

There is an article in the Oct 17 Railwayage online stating the Diners have been removed from eastern trains. He is either mistaken or referring not to the actual physical Viewliner II diners turned plastic tray meal in a lounge car, just referring to the downgraded quality and their not truly being dining cars, right? They are physically - now as it is after Oct 1 - still running these cars on the LSL, Meteor, and Crescent right? And maybe on Cardinal and Star later?

So stupid overall...

There are 11 cars on daily assignment - formerly known as Viewliner II Diners, now more appropriately called Viewliner Sleeper Class Lounge Cars:

4 - Crescent
4 - Silver Meteor
3 - Lake Shore Limited

Don't hold your breath on the Cardinal or Silver Star getting any of these cars...... The time came and went for the Cardinal to receive them, and the Amfleet Cafe/Lounge car stayed, while the Viewliner Sleeper Lounge didn't. That was DUMB too. Can't imagine putting them on the Silver Star is high on priority list either.

Have you considered that Amtrak is reconfiguring the remaining diners to better serve the new food service model?  Wasn't that what they announced they would do?

Actually the Star has a better chance at receiving them. The reason the Cardinal did not get a Viewliner diner lounge, as was told to me by a few Amtrak employee friends, was that they could not justify an entire diner lounge for just one sleeper. If the Cardinal should get a second sleeper in the future, then they might get the Viewliner...

Please provide link on where an announcement was made that Amtrak was ACTIVELY reconfiguring the remaining 14 Viewliner II Diners......... Action speaks louder than words when it comes to anything long distance these days with current regime.

The Amtrak Cardinal train could use a second sleeper any time. It had for a few years back in Boardman's administration and still sold out regularly. The single Viewliner sells out way in advance as it is now with multiple turnover while enroute. Amtrak has two available Viewliner sleepers IF it wanted to operate them on the Cardinal. If they are good enough for axle count cars, they should be good enough for the Cardinal. What's the problem? There are 15 Viewliner II Diners in storage or not being used. Only 11 are being used in regular assignment. This is poor utilization of a brand new fleet of cars.

The Cardinal is on Delta Dick's chopping block and will most likely be the 1st. LDT to get axed .

The refit is just another Anderson lie. Hard to refit them when they are popping up as axle counts. Actions speak louder than skewed facts and lies. The lies do speak volumes of his intentions and integrity though.

If that be his plan,  what remains to be seen is the response to it when verbalized as there could be key elements who are not even aware od such a proposal.
