Are all LD Trains running with less than l0 cars?
Author: twropr

Having seen recent consists of the Lake Shore Limited and Silver Meteor raises the question as to whether any winter consists other than Auto Train or the safety patrol specials have ten cars or more.

I haven't seen any western long distance trains with 10 cars or more lately, but isn't this the slow time of the year when trains have historically been short?

Does Amtrak run a maintenance blitz on the cars not actively used?

That could be a good opportunity to deep clean cars and perform basic repairs.

Most Superliner equipped trains. Are running 7 to 9 during the slow peaks.
During the more busier times. they are about 10 to 12, depending on the route.

The Coast Starlight is running 9 or 10 cars right now.
The SW Chief is down to 7 cars.
I think the Sunset is running at 9 cars. unless they dropped a car at this time.

Empire Builder is running with 7 cars (8 if you include the Superliner Trans/Dorm Sleeper which they will sell space in this year supposedly as needed). That's down from one Seattle Sleeper and one Seattle Coach. Attendants were furloughed Jan 6th on the Empire Builder to allow for reduced consists.

I don't know about any maintenance and repair blitz that gets done. Amtrak claims this was the reason they took the cars off but that's all been suspect!

Capitol Limited had its consist reduced right after New Years!

It lost the 3001 sleeper and a coach car.

Winter consist:
  • Superliner Trans Dorm/Sleeper. Selling room #17 to 24 and #2 to 6. Rooms #7 and 8 are being reserved for onboard staff (LSA's), and room #1 for the sleeper attendant in thie Trans Superliner Dorm/Sleeper.
  • Superliner Sleeper
  • Cross Country Cafe Car - aka Sleeper Lounge
  • Sightseer Lounge Car
  • Superliner Coach
  • Superliner Coach
Train ran with a SOLD OUT status New Year's to Sunday Jan 5th at least. It really needed the second Superliner Sleeper till at least Jan 5th. Computer glitch had people assigned to Sleeper 3002 and 3001, which didn't exist. Some passengers accommodated. others weren't!

This is basically a 3 1/2 car train,  Pretty anemic for a LD train anywhere. IMHO

Now, if they add the sleeper, are we looking to maximize revenue and charge full fare?

Funny. They take many cars off during this time of the year.

And they start running ads on Facebook and on other outlets.
For deals, specials etc for the LD trains.

Not sure what u r saying here.

There is a law of diminishing returns.    The way to make the most money operating the Capitol Ltd, is to stop running it, at leaat as of right now.

I just think its pathetic that, apparently, the train runs with 2 coaches and  1 1/2 sleepers as revenue producing cars, and still meets demand.
Of course, if its not meeting demand, they are just stupid (imho) to run a train that is so small. I guess if they train starts to fill up, they will add cars back....

Sounds like amtk is trying publicize, tho....

What I meant was only add another sleeper if you don't have to discount the crap out of it.   Also, I've never checked, does Amtrak have blackout days for the various discounts and use of AGR points?

The hard reality is that an enormous percentage of Americans turn to airlines or their own private automobiles for intercity travel. Amtrak LD trains are never going to do much better. The airlines provide over 10,000 seats a day on nonstops from NEC cities into Florida... twice that, or more, if you include connections through Charlotte, Atlanta, etc. Without dropping fares to something senseless like $1, Amtrak is doing good to carry 1,000. And I-95 is carrying more than the airlines and Amtrak combined.

NO, they are not adding cars back if demand warrants it, because the Capitol Limited ran MANY days after Christmas as SOLD OUT and this was up to a MONTH in advance for sleeper class. I had been looking for sleeper space and barely got it when I did!

Because there is so little demand for travel between back-to-school time in early January and Spring Break time in early March. They need to both cut offerings AND promote what little is being offered to get traffic.
