If 2020 Super Bowl was held in the passenger train era ......
Author: WrongWayMurphy

.... how would the San Francisco 49 fans travel by rail to Miami?

Forget that there was no SB then, or that a group could charter a train, or air travel.

i was wondering what logical route one would typically take SF-Miami in say, 1950?

Secondarily, was there a sleeper one could take without changing rooms/cars?

I guess the the SP Coast Line to LA, then SP  Sunset Route would get one as far as New Orleans,
but beyond that I have no idea.

City of San Francisco to Chicago, and then any of the Chicago-Florida trains.  No one would waste an extra day on the Zephyr if they were purely just travelling somewhere as quick as possible.

In 1950, the City of San Francisco left Oakland at 5:37pm while the California Zephyr would have departed more than 8 hours earlier at 9:00am.  The CofSF would then arrived at 10:45am in Chicago on Day 3....but the Zephyr wouldn't arrive until 1:30pm.  About 3 hours later.  So, the Zephyr was about 11 longer ride.  One option was for speed while the other was for the scenery.

Why is there no mention of the KC Chiefs who are going to the Super Bowl too this year! (and hopefully win it like they did 50 years ago) But thinking how to get there in 1950 would of meant taking the Frisco Kansas City Florida Special to get you to northern Florida then several possibilities to get to Miami.

Bay Area fans could have ridden the Overland/City of St. Louis through Pullman to KC (or the SF Chief), and then joined their KC rivals on the Special to Florida...what could possibly go wrong?

SP to LA, Sunset to N.O. then whatever the L&N train was along the Gulf Coast.

Other option in 1950 was the Santa Fe. They operated a Pullman from Richmond Ca to New Orleans. Richmond to a Houston on Santa Fe then Mopac to New Orleans. Then you could transfer to a Gulf Wind.

In 1955 SP 98 left San Francisco at 7:15AM and arrived in LA 5:00PM.
SP#2 Sunset Limited left LA at 8PM and arrived New Orleans 4PM on day 3.
Making a connecting to L&N#38 Gulf Wind leaving New Orleans at 5PM and arriving Jacksonville 8:45AM.
Seaboard Silver Meteor left Jacksonville 9:25PM and arrived Miami 4:25PM,
or FEC#3 left Jacksonville at 9:45AM and arrived Miami at 4:55PM.

About 81 hours if you made all three connections and arrived Miami on time.

On Amtrak via Chicago and Washington scheduled time is currently 105 hours at best..
