Could Be A "Wrap"
Author: overniteman

Info up and down the Amtrak gossip mainline was the Coke wrap was coming off this weekend in DC.

The unit ran down to DC and was held there for protection service. Turns out Amtrak did need it for yesterdays # 92, Silver Star

Today, it's heading back to DC on #91 and the weather in the New York area is monsoon like.

Here. it's slowed for a little Southbound wrong main travel at Edison, New Jersey at 11:40 this AM. Hopefully Amtrak continues to keep it in service.

It can stay on as long as Coke is still paying for it.
This is advertising and you only make money if you're not giving it away for free.

Amtrak made their money on it already.  They
aren't losing money on it now, though Coke comes
out ahead with a little extra publicity.

Funny all this fuss over an advertisement, though
I'll admit, it is a good looking understated wrap.

Remember Cake Boss - the first 24 hours was
24 hours too long!

Funny - I never did see either in person.

Based on how Coca-Cola typically uses the polar bears for holidays-themed advertising, I suspect the period they paid for expired at least three weeks ago, if not right after Christmas.

An update to the original post.

The Coke unit is back in New York. It turned and brought #80 North into NYPenn.

they should just run it for awhile even thou the contract is up, it will protect the paint underneath

So just give away the advertising revenue? And you guys wonder why Amtrak is always short of money.

Locomotives have work to do....the wrap won't get peeled off until a regular service interval...that's the most economical way to deal with it, even if they are getting any more payment for the display.

The contract was fullfilled - Amtrak got paid.  They
are losing no more money on that unit today then
they are losing on any other unwrapped unit.

Ironically, removing the wrap will cut into profits.

'Course not much good PR can come from a
Christmas Polar Bear in February... or July.  Then
again, it's been said, there's no such thing as bad
publicity.

I'm sure Coca Cola is enjoying the free advertising.

Hey Mitch,

I just can't believe you haven't covered this one like a blanket.  Where's the famous zoom-pan ????  Amtrak will never be the same.  Please accept my cheap substitute as I am still learning from the master ...... LOL !

Hope all else is well with you.
