Amtrak Dining Cars
Author: rhmich

Am interested in finding out, if available,  the built date and retirement date of two Amtrak passenger cars recently sold to Great Lakes Central Railroad in Owosso Michigan.   One is former dining car number 8550.   The other car number is 8532, if that one was a dining car as well.   They came from Beech Grove.   8550 has a lot of grafiti on it.   Looks as if they have been sitting around somewhere for a lot of years.

Believe or not those were some of the last retired. Probably were set aside for a few weeks at Sunnyside before going to the Grove.

I am sure there's other info and more comprehensive info, but here's two links to explore:

8550:   http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/heritagediner/8550A.html

8532:   http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/heritagediner/8532A.html

Heritage Diner 8532 has the full Temoinsa Rebuild interor and I think was in operation up until just recently, as many Heritage Diners with this rebuild were kept in service on the Meteor and Crescent........

EDIT - I don't think they got any of the graffiti or "rough look" till they were sent off for storage at Chicago and Beech Grove. Again, these Diners were in regular operation on the Meteor and Crescent till displaced just recently by the Viewliner II Diners!

There's realtively little storage space at Sunnyside, and certainly no cars covered in graffiti.

I was going to say the same thing about Chicago's 14th street yard, but somehow they ended up with graffiti after visiting both places.

Since neither of us were there, I guess we'll never know...

beech groove is  likely where the paint was applied, stainless cars i have beEn told it comes off easy,

THE LATE BUDD CARS OF bn ANCESTORY  were modified a lot for auto train work initially by amtrak

older  as built diners have a lot of water damage i think under the kitchen, according to our resident experts here
