Passenger Trains > Coronavirus has Arrived on AmtrakDate: 03/08/20 14:07 Coronavirus has Arrived on Amtrak Author: djm448 Patient in St. Louis flew from Italy to Chicago, then took Amtrak 303 home to St. Louis.
"On Sunday, Amtrak issued a news release stating that the woman had been on Amtrak train 303. "Amtrak is notifying passengers and employees who may have been on the same train, and as a precaution, we have taken the train out of service for comprehensive cleaning and disinfection, and are also working to do a thorough disinfection of the Chicago and St. Louis stations," the statement read." https://media.amtrak.com/2020/03/amtrak-statement-coronavirus-update-200-p-m-ct-mar-8/ https://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/coronavirus/st-louis-county-health-officials-tracking-history-and-contacts-of/article_94fe6bf6-f679-5b88-870c-18c5f79d019b.html?fbclid=IwAR3Etsg3u4RTKoY3hhrzPF1JhET4bMCO3F21Gq_GNel8Qgw2sgJBpnRkqxQ#utm_campaign=blox&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social Edited 1 time(s). The pessimist in me thinks, just because they SAY they're going to do it, doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen. The coach cleaners probably don't want to go in it either. Dow futures contracts may be frozen now, I can't tell. Morning will be interesting. Being locked in to plunging stock & futures positions gets peoples attention.

Groups (95%) at least, some independent Chinise tourism probably continued for a while. Only 17 Corona virus cases even with sharing a long border with China. Well, we don't know how those workers will be chosen; perhaps it will be volunteers. And I am positive Amtrak will provide proper clothing, masks, etc. Date: 03/09/20 02:55 Re: Coronavirus has Arrived on Amtrak Author: jp1822 Duna Wrote:

"Kremlin" (often used as a symbol of Russia) translates as citadel, fortress, walled city. There are many kremlins in Russia. A useful strategy in times of invasion, human or pathogen. It's all about defense. They've had plenty of experience with people and pathogens attacking (and failing). Many would say the Statue of Liberty is the symbol of the USA. As the poem says, we welcome "...The wretched refuse of your teeming shore..." Date: 03/09/20 09:55 Re: Coronavirus has Arrived on Amtrak Author: Lackawanna484 Reuters reports that the Chinese government has issued a protest to the Russian government over what it describes as discriminatory monitoring of Chinese nationals in Russia. Visitors from both China and Taiwan have been apprehended and placed in quarantine for 14 days. Reuters cites reports that bus, tram, and other drivers are reporting "Chinese looking" people to the police.

I'm guessing that if you're a Chinese tourist, though, Russia probably seems like a free & creative place. Date: 03/09/20 13:46 Re: Coronavirus has Arrived on Amtrak Author: Duna KevinLA Wrote:

It's not like that. Russians gave Communism the boot in 1991. The 90s and early 00s were rough, what with "oligarchs" plundering. Too bad many of them left for the US, we're starting to see the chaotic ugly results now. Overall, Russia is much better now. The country is now much further right than the US. They have a very low national debt and debit. Many consumer products are made 100% inside Russia, so they are less suceptable to international trade disruptions (ahem....). In many ways, Russia today is like the US in the 50s & early 60s. Urban-lifestyle-wise, a visit to Moscow or StP is like going to Scandinavia 30+ years ago (pre-mass 3rd-world "migrant"). Awsome architecture, concerts, people mostly in good moods, optomistic about the future. Russians are a lot like other Europeans or Americans. Thery rather like Americans. Trump is popular there. They don't understand why the US is moving left when we should heed the example of what happend to them (by the Bolsheveks aka usual suspects). Most importantly, most Russians love Russia and feel a strong connection to something that there's not an good translation for. Not ancestor worship but a realization that they are part of a bigger thing that has existed for many generations. An "Eastern" way mixed with the wst. There is WAY more "patriotism" there than in the US. They do what they do and the culture survives. Do you, like so many US leftists, hate Russians because they are no longer Communist? Miss the USSR? If you're an American of European heritage / cultures, you have far more in common with the average Russian than an immigrant from SE Asia, Africa, or the Middle East. Russia = Slavic + Scandanavian with large doses of Central Asia & some Caucasians (Armenians, Georgians...) mixed in. Here's a thread covering some of my trip to Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Volgograd (Stalingrad- where WW2 turned). Lots of trains and transit to ride, safe, frequent, and reliable and relatively inexpensive The photos are not too "cherry picked" but are representative. The Metro stations really are beautiful, mostly because the people respect and care about it. There's little litter, grafitti or people on city streets being obnoxious. It's a civilized place. I have never seen so much new construction in an urbanized area: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?17,4637147 Here's a recent thread on the European board from Lackawana484 about railfanning Moscow. Stunning steam action photos. Lots of Russian railfans, millions of photos online. No one hassled me for taking photos: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?17,4955068 When was the last time you visited Russia? Photos? Edited 3 time(s). This "message" seems to say "it's all about the money".....thus implying "people? not so much." Yes money IS important. No, money is not the only thing......money is but a tool for the use of humans. That being said, it does comfort me that now perhaps suifficient attention can be given to those actions which help mitigagte, and ultimately bring this crisis to an end.
