This is not very informative.

Cease as in temorary cessation of operations due to the coronavirus or cease as in permanently discontinued?

Who is the source of this rumor?

just a rumor to think that it is anything else would be silly

if you want to read more into it knock yourself out

it would  be covid related you would have to think if it was correct

maybe just the CZ will be cutback to a shorter distance  train, but the emy-chi of the 29th maybe be the last

will see what plays out, if any verification comes up, this could be hog wash therefore as stated a rumor, perhaps the  empire builder with few  other options would continuue, all dependent on many variables such as load factors, health concerns  etc

just see if any other info surfaces before anyone gets worried

Was actually considering taking a trip with all this free time I have off now, but last week I checked and that God awful Sunset Limited was 11 hours late.

If that's any indication on how those trains are running these days, they can get rid of them for all I care and redraw the national map to something that makes sense to where more people will ride and the tracks will actually run the trains better.

Re: western long distance may cease

when the train is late just more train time for  the money , with gps tracking , not like you need to get to the depot early

the above just came from facebbok , there are always rumors  and b/s so no need for anyone to even approach this as reality   why i said it was a rumor, and perhaps Todd should remove this thread as i can't erase it

the only travel that is safe is your own car, and probably wipe down the keypad and handle on the the pumps, minimize curtail all contact

maybe cut amtrak trains to tri weekly ? bi weekly the ones that remain

those that have traveled  to the north east self isolate!

Otoh...I feel like it would be a great time to take a train ride.  Get a train almost to yourself.  I think it would be at least as clean as  the local food store or the post office..

Not all the money going out to 'stimulate' the economy goes where it should. Much is siphoned off to personnal accounts and disappears. In the MILLIONs. Therefore not all the good gets done where it was intended.

Another good fact-filled report.

Keeping Amtrak running even at a bare bones level is an economic stimulus if it involves keeping paychecks going to its employees. If this thing gets to the point where Amtrak has to shut down for public health reasons it’s still a stimulus even if they are paying all Amtrak employees to stay home. That’s where we are at this point - anything that Keeps paychecks going to as many workers as possible is going to be the policy. Any worker still getting a paycheck through this crisis is a person who will be able to reengage in the economy immediately and help the country get back on its feet. From what I have heard Amtrak has not yet had to issue any furloughs including those employees who work are out of work due to suspended trains. We can have our future debates on the network when this is over, but for right now keeping money going to the employees wallets and maintaining skeleton operations so that the company can get back going again when this is over is what matters and is thus a legitimate part of this stimulus.

Amen to that.   Personally,  we're paying our household helpers in full for however long we're all confined to our respective homes.   Luckily we can afford to and I wouldn't think of not doing so.

no Reno-Denver confirmed now, all other western service looks intact

the employee tested positive west of denver, so his comrades are self isolating for 2 weeks west of denver is largely a tourist market, any one that wants to go to the bay area from den chi just has to go via the chief and their bus connections from san Joaquins or whatever they are called emy den via the chief is 6 hours more than the cz so not bad
