CZ Cut To Denver, CO
Author: SandHouseTalk

A shortage of workers is leading Amtrak to limit California Zephyr service to the Chicago-Denver portion of its route, effective today.  The Zephyr becomes the first of Amtrak’s long-distance trains to see a change in service because of the coronavirus outbreak.  An email to Amtrak employees says a worker on the route has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, leading to a 14-day self-quarantine for other coworkers.  Today’s eastbound Zephyr will be turned at Reno, Nev., with passengers continuing by bus; this afternoon’s westbound departure from Chicago will terminate in Denver. The train scheduled to depart Emeryville, Calif., on Monday will instead originate in Denver, with no alternate transportation provided, according to the Amtrak Alerts Twitter feed.

According to Amtrak.com the Zephyr will be not running Reno to Denver so it will be running between Emeryville and Reno as it will also serve Chicago to Denver. I see no offer of bus service between Reno and Denver.

I wonder if the Reno section will use spare equipment from San Joaquin and capital Corredor‘s, or if they will keep the normal reduced consist with a sleeping car and run dining service on it.

Due to the virus situation They are only going to bus passengers stuck on a truncated train that has already departed before truncation. I doubt they will offer any further bus substitution until this is over.

Sad to hear, coming into week 3 of this and the person who claimed this will be over in 30 days is gonna be eating his words if nothing changes within 2 more weeks!

You keep on hoping it lasts 6 months like some others are saying.  And then see how your beloved Amtrak looks then.

Keep in mind that sometimes messages from Amtrak Operations may not what really happends on the ground.  Local folks can and still do service changes that are unaware to the ops folks.
Many times local conditions allow much better.

This may not be for long. Looking at Greyhound which uses Amtrak as their connecting carrier between Reno and Salt Lake you can see no bus service until April 2nd. The second screen shot is April 2nd showing AMT for Amtrak at Reno.

This could be subject to change but with Amtrak being a contract carrier for Greyhound they would have to give good information.

Going Westbound the computer has the option of sending you via Las Vegas Nevada.

It kind of ironic that 50 years ago that the California California zephyr discontinued March 1970

Uh Oh! In looking at Greyhound tonight things have changed. Greyhound has reconfigured their computer to route passengers via Los Angeles and Las Vegas in both directions between Sacramento and Denver (what I used). This is as far out as their reservation system goes which is until March 28 2021. Obviously this could change once the Cal Zephyr is back in service but for the foreseeable future the train is no longer in the Greyhound route.

I see Amtrak shows the train cancelled until the train of the 13th. That makes sense the 14 day quarantine.

amtrak will take you between the bay area and Denver on their computer via the southwest chief, only 6 hours slower eastbound, there is still service, 2 trains 2 busses now still be fun
