Several years ago, weekly service of the Empire Builders (#7/#8) was on either a tri or quad weekly basis. Daily service was maintained between CHI and MSP however. These trains were numbered 807 and 808. Amtrak has maintained these numbers applying to the CHI/MSP segment of 7&8 as they sometimes add a car for this service due to demand.

I wonder what other trains have three designations....7,27,807 and 8,28 and 808!!

Yes, it's also known as the "Baby Builder", Train #807, not shown on the timetable as such, operates with short-turn cars which run from Chicago to the Twin Cities only on the westbound #7/27. These car(s) are taken off that night and put onto the next morning's eastbound #8/28. Passengers whose trip is between Chicago and the Twin Cities inclusively are booked on Trains 807 or 808.

It's true this train operates with three numbers between Chicago and the Twin Cities. The CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR once did, when it carried cars for the now-defunct DESERT WIND and PIONEER.
