Trip to New Haven, Westbrook, and Old Saybrook, Ct: 4/14/17
Author: Passfanatic

On April 14th, 2017, I took a railfanning trip to New Haven, Westbrook, and Old Saybrook. I used MNR to get to New Haven, and then switched to SLE to the other two places.

1. MNR M3 and MNR M8s at GCT. I rode the M8 to New Haven.

2. NH Painted BL20GH at South Norwalk, Ct Station. I took this picture from my MNR train. Today, many of the NH RR letterings have been taken off of the BL20s.

3. Interior of CDOT owned Shore Line East Mafersa Coach

I’m looking forward to seeing one of those CDOT P40’s refurbished and in a new livery.

1. On April 14th, 2017, Amtrak Northeast Regional Train # 137 arrives into Old Saybrook, Connecticuts station with a P42 and ACS-64 leading . It is very rare to find a diesel leading a regularly scheduled Amtrak train during the daytime east of New Haven. In the background, we can see the old New Haven Railroad Station buildings.

2. Amtrak Train # 174 arriving into OSB

3. Westbound SLE Train with Former Amtrak P40

Interesting to see the milepost on the high level platform at Old Saybrook.
Back in the New Haven days, I believe the ticket agent was also the tower operator there.

Looks like a fun trip. Lots of trains is a key ingredient and some nice variety. Are the Brookville units still working?

Does anyone recall the history of the single level Heritage Commuter Coaches they use on the Shore Line East Service? The ones that are similiar to the old Heritage based MARC cars.....

The Mafersa cars used to operate on Virginia Railway Express until VRE decided to go all bilevel. They never operated in MARC service. Enjoy those Mafersa cars as much as possible because CDOT is in process of replacing them with brand new coaches. I didn't notice the milepost sign at OSB-good catch though. I think the Brockville Units work for the most part. In the past, the ones that have operated on the Waterbury shuttle service have been hit or miss-I guess that it's where they got their maintenance done.
