New York City Transit Interim President Sarah Feinberg Launches Investigation into Chambers Street Station Incident

Interim President of NYC Transit Sarah Feinberg issued the following statement regarding an incident at Chambers Street station involving an A train:

“Early today, just after 1 a.m. a northbound A train became separated between the sixth and seventh cars of the ten-car train as it entered Chambers Street Station. Ten passengers were safely evacuated with no reported injuries to customers or employees.

“At this time, we believe this to be an isolated incident, however, I am launching a full investigation, and out of an abundance of caution, the entire R179 fleet is being pulled from service until further notice. We have redeployed additional spare cars and minimal impacts to service are anticipated.

“This marks the latest unacceptable issue with one of Bombardier’s R179 cars. Customer and employee safety is New York City Transit’s North Star. We will not compromise one inch on safety. We will not return the fleet to service without certainty and validation that all cars are fit for passenger service – period.”

Bring on the R32's!!!     If they had any sense, they just keep rebuilding them.  Build full length cabs if u have to.  Its not impossible.

Anyone know why they went back to 60' cars on the B division?   I thought 75' cars was a good idea. 2 less cars per train and more capacity...

Staggered door spacing and the door set on the left side is too close to the end of the car.

75' cars on NYCT means no open-gangway possibility due to too much offset on curves. They also cannot run on the former BMT Eastern Division.

Im not up on anything after the R46's.    It took 50 years to go from R01 to R-46, and ion the next 35 years it went from 47 tp 211.  I guess they decided to make every paperclip an R contract.    It used to be just railcars and related.   I know there are lists of every R contract...I'm just afraid to look at it.

But anyway...Are the new 60 foot cars in cab and non-cab versions, or married pairs, or 4 or 5 car sets?  seems like it would be a total waste to have a full cab on both ends of each car...

4 and 5 car sets for 8 and 10 car trains. J/Z, L, M must be 8 cars. C can be 8 or 10 cars, but almost always 8.
The current huge order of R211's will replace all R44(SIR), R46, and R68 cars.
The next huge IRT order to replace the R62 will be the R262.

For the numbers R212 - R261 - who know what that was for.

It sucks about the R179 fleet being pulled but safety must come first. It looks like the R32s will be returning to service. If many of those cars can still operate fine, then bring them back.

I belive that the R211s that operate on the SIR won't have the open gangways.

The R32's MDBF are not good.

Many of the R211's for subway service will not have open gangways either. They are not universally appealing. The homeless with their shopping carts will have no trouble walking the 5 car sets, and if not, their stench will permeate anyway.

The R211s are not currently intended to replace the R68/A fleet.

Base order of 535 plus option orders for 1,077 cars would replace them all.

I thought a lot of the R32's are currently being used as reefs.

There were once 600 R32's. 222 remained in service from 2010. The rest were reefed.

With service reduced significantly at this time I am sure there are plenty of other car types available instead of R32. Took my last ride on an R32 in February.

Total orders are for 1612 cars.
940 are for R46 replacements, which leaves 672
75 are for R44SI replacements which leaves 597
32 cars in 4 car sets for the eastern division which leaves 565 cars.
Out of that 565 there are added spares, planned extensions of existing consists, and SAS phase 2 cars.

There are 625 R68s which require roughly 780 cars to replace them.
The numbers don't work.
