There are huge numbers of people wandering around NYC and elsewhere who are suffering severe mental illness. "Not taking your pills" is not an excuse for stabbing people, or throwing stuff on the subway tracks.  Cutting back on mental health services and confinement isn't much of a solution when the alternative is police intervention.  In many places the cops are not big hug folks for people wielding machetes.

And there's the problem, New York and mental. Should be in an institution out of the public's way. But i'm sure there will be a crowd saying that it's wrong to put a straight jacket on this fool.

But the institutions were closed because they cost too much.

Where in New York City is anything out of the public's way?

When "send the police" is the only tool dispatchers have, that's what they do.

UNTIL it can be ascertained there was no crime and will be no crime/violence, i think sending the police is the safe thing to do..........

That hasn't been a satisfactory resolution for folks who end up dead. Officers and sick people.

A naked guy waving a machete may not respond to a command as an officer intends.

what is YOUR remedy for a "satisfactory resolution" with a person waving a machete in public?

Stating a resolution is easy (everyone leaves alive is a happy ending). Writing a process that gets to that point is the hard part. Meanwhile I hope people have a safe ride home and don't have their train derailed by someone misdirecting their creativity.

People trained in psychiatric intervention are better qualified to answer that question than I am.  That's why I've suggested they are better first responders in some cases than the police.

Telling him to drop the machete, and shooting him if he doesn't,  has some obvious shortfalls as an operational protocol.  The system is clearly broken, and many police officers are placed in situations where they lack appropriate training.

Post the job for "Unarmed Police Officer - Must be certified in psychology and deescalation" and see how many people apply.

The British model (first responder police armed with night sticks) works in a country where guns are not prevalent. But in a country when practically anyone an officer comes into contact with could be armed most police officers want to be better armed than anyone who is a threat. And I don't blame them.
