Amtrak San Joaquins Double decker cars question

 Any1 know which trains have the double decker cars on them? Weekdays and weekend schedule? TIA/ KFC/ AIA

Trains 711 and 718 have the "Comet" cars.  Trains 710, 712, 713, 715, 716, and 719 have the "California" cars (double-deckers).

What will California do with their ex-NJT cars when the Siemens cars come ?

Right now they are used dead in tow for BNSF train length rules for grade crossings.

They never needed to use those cars int he past for grade crossing protection requirements, so what is it about modern crossing signals that have failed???  It seems the older systems were better, with less cars!!!

It was mentioned sometime in the past that Amtrak adopted a new wheel contour under which less of the wheel contacts the rail head.  Less friction, leading to better fuel economy, but also less electrical conductivity to activate crossing signals.

Remember viewliners baggage and at least one diner were used for wheel counts, so by using state owed saving on leasing costs of Amtrak equipment..

Less friction, less fuel, but more cars-tonnage-fuel-wheel wear than needed  - where's the economy ?
