Passenger Trains > Late running #11 Coast Starlight at AlvisoDate: 01/14/21 15:46 Late running #11 Coast Starlight at Alviso Author: SPB This morning's southbound Starlight was running about three hours late on its approach to San Jose. It is shown here along the mudflats at Alviso on a bright and sunny day. Today's train came down the Niles Subdivision. It is still running with an expanded consist of three sleepers and four coaches.

- Baggage - Superliner Trans Dorm/Sleeper - 3 Regular Superliner Sleepers - Hi-Level Lounge (Pacific Parlor Car) - Superliner Diner - 1 Superliner Coach/Business Class - 3 Superliner Coaches Sometimes an addition Regular Superliner Sleeper and/or Superliner coach would be added. Rarely did the consist ever fall below 3 regular Superliner Sleepers. Roomettes and bedrooms were highly sought after even as "day rooms" between LA and the Bay Area with absolutely no advertising. Imagine if there had been advertising - even a bit more today! And of course prior to the Pacific Surfliners being expanded on up to San Luis Obispo, additional coaches were needed for local traffic........ I know that we are dealing with a pandemic, but even as the frequency of the Canadian train decreased from daily to tri-weekly to bi-weekly etc., VIA did look to expand the consist as demand would warrant. Course the expansion was more driven by high-end vacation travellers. The baseline of regular and local Canadian traffic likely wouldn't have needed expansion of the consist. The whole Amtrak LD network is in a sad state, course that isn't the only thing in a sad state these days.........
