According to trains.con website, the first of 25 ALP45 dual mode locomotives has been unloaded at Port Newark, NJ. Looks like # 4535

This would make sense if they actually started any of the new services theyve been talking about for the last 50 years.

They need diesel locomotives to replace 40 and 50 year old EMD's. That fact that they bought these things is what is stupid.

VERY expensive units that will probably never be fully utilized as designed as "dual modes."

Yea...buying DM's for diesel only services seems pretty dumb.   I guess u could use them on the Boonton line, but I'd guess that the crews would keep using them in diesel mode the whole way.

How many of the F40's and GP40 types are still in revenue service anyway.

How is it that Metra in chicago can keep things running with F40's , F59s, MP36's?

They are in use on a daily basis on the Coast line and Raritan line, and will enable more single-seat trains on both of those busy lines..

Y'all forgetting standardisation in parts, training and servicing...a solid fleet of one type is cheaper to maintain than a varied fleet.

These are high maintenance and fuel hogs with twin prime movers and cost $11 million each. They already have 35 dual-powered locos while they need just 9 for that function on any given day. Nobody is getting any more "1-seat rides"  until new tunnels are built and the old ones rebuilt. They don't need these. Maybe they should specify straight diesel version without all the electrical apparatus and still have some uniformity of parts.

NJT has NOT been expanding one-seat rides on the Coast Line since practically the RESTORATION of this one-seat service several years ago, despite onboarding additional dual modes. Same four round trips isn't it? Dual modes are used as diesels on the lower end line of the Coast Line - shuttling between Bay Head and Long Branch. I certainly support more one-seat rides and think it would be more a more efficient railroad too.

What is the capacity of a dual mode pulled train into NY Penn compared to an ALP46A?  My understanding is the straight electric is good for two more multilevels.  True, or not true?

ALP46 and ALP45DP can handle 10 MLV cars, but the latter only 8 in diesel mode.

They still run 12 car MU's. That has more seating capacity than 10 MLVs.
