Passenger Trains > Stadler Shipping CalTrain Set to Colorado

Word from Utah is Stadler has shipped CalTrain set #1 by rail off to Colorado - Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo, CO.  Looking forward to images from Utah and Wyoming...

I would assume UP would take it over the D&RGW line rather than through WY.

You will be able to watch them running up and down the NEC in a few years.

Interesting that they shipped the cars on flat cars rather than on their own wheels.

since they are on flats i would expect them thru wyo

They don't have knuckle couplers, so they can't be part of a regular train.

And a little further down the page is a shot of one of the bi-modal E/DMUs that will be entering service in my little corner of the world (Trondheim, Norway) later this year.

Sure they can.  A specially modified car, with a janey coupler on one end and the non-janey coupler on the other is placed between the freight locomotive and the load being hauled.

The proper search terms have eluded me, but not too long ago someone posted a photo of (if I recall correctly) passenger locomotives being hauled this way.  The line up was something like:

freight loco -> match wagon -> passenger loco -> match wagon -> match wagon -> passenger loco -> match wagon -> freight loco

I highly doubt they will ever run on the NEC

NJT multi level cars in the form of triplets with a middle power car, built by Bombardier. Later on, SEPTAs, built by CRRC.

Amtrak - no. These are commuter cars with low ceilings and poor provisions for luggage.

This is how Metra’s last order of Nippon Sharyo Highliner cars were shipped between Rochelle, IL and the Metra Electric District tracks. A flatcar (TTX IIRC) had a standard coupler on one end and the coupler used by the EMU’s on the other.

It is my firm belief that Amtrak will be running some type of EMU/DMU on the NEC within five years, Stadler has a good chance in the bid as they are built in the USA and are well regarded. The DMUs will also be excellent for corridors that Amtrak wants to expand into in the near future.

Acela and Avelia are EMUs also, just capable of higher speeds. Why order Stadlers for the NEC, when all Amtrak has to do is run these sets with different stops and different schedules to have "Acela" and "Regional" servivces?

And don't forget the Metroliners were EMUs, also, but designed and manufactured here in the USA by Budd, who's no longer around.

Too early to talk the corridor pipe dream until we actually see the next new one in service. Otherwise, local regions/states will be making the decisions (Brightline), NOT AMTRAK on ordering EMUs and DMUs.

That was Anderson's pipe dream because he saw them in Europe, and he is gone. They have more than enough Siemens Sprinter locos on hand now. They will simply buy Siemens coaches to replace Amfleet-1, which will be bumped elsewhere, scrapped, or replace corroding Horizons. The current Acelas are high maintenance, difficult spare parts stream, can't handle low level platforms, can't be modified, can't be turned into regular railroad cars, 20 of 21 are not owned by Amtrak, and are done for. 

State DOTs decide where to expand, if at all, thanks to PRIIA-209 that Gardner master-minded, not Amtrak.  Amtrak's statutory responsibility outside the NEC are simply national network trains, which Gardner and Coscia are running into the ground.
