Zephyr in a Winter Wonderland
Author: ColoradoRailfan

Greetings!

Since the Zephyr moved to its thrice-weekly schedule, it has been difficult for me to get pictures of the westbound out of Denver. Mainly because there are three days of the week that I am almost always busy in the morning hours. You guessed it! Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday! The three days the Zephyr heads west.

Yesterday, however, the Zephyr was running a few hours late and this resulted in my typical Thursday morning meetings at worked having already ended when the train departed Denver Union Station. I set up for a shot of the Zephyr as it climbed toward Tunnel 1 on the UP Moffat Tunnel Sub, roughly 24 track-miles west of Denver. The night before saw several inches of fresh snow fall, and Thursday morning had mostly clear skies, creating a beautiful winter scene.

That is a nice image. I'm even more impressed if you climbed the hill (so many drone shots).

Well worth the effort. Threes nothing like climbing up to a vantage point instead of pushing some buttons on your airborne pixel maker.

They expanded the consist because of the cancellations!  Some real good numbers into Reno and Sacramento!

Alas, there is nothing there to stand on. It's a drone shot.

I wonder what's happening with the subdivision that occupies most of the frame. It was permitted a couple years ago, but nothing's happening. I'd sure love to plop a house in that clearing atop the bump in the right side of the frame. The view would include Denver, Big 10 Curve, and potentially Tunnel 1.
