Yes, we're inside looking out at the one time joy of back porch  railroading.  Here's hoping the unnecessary prohibition of riding on the rear platform is rescinded.

Yeah, good luck with that. Surprised that it wasn't "outlawed" years before. OSHA was probably having heart attacks.

Why would OSHA be having heart attacks?  Are you aware of any documented cases of substantive injuries and/or deaths associated with guests riding on a rear platform on a PV?

No, but OSHA doesn't wait for accidents. They like to be "proactive" and stop them before they happen.
Even if the chances are one in a gazillion!

Would that be OSHA or FRA?  OSHA governs workplace hazards--a railfan leaning too far out from the platform to get that ideal shot would not be an occupational casualty.

Actually, it's neither OSHA or the FRA.  Delta Dummy made that rule when he took over as president after a series of accidents that called Amtrak's safety culture into question.  To the best of my knowledge, there has not been a serious injury or fatality from riding on the back platform of a PV or in the vestibule.

Maybe Anderson watched 'Double Indemnity' with Fred MacMurray & Barbara Stanwyck too many times where Fred pushes Barbara's husband off the back platform of an observation car...

It should get rescinded, has any accident actually happen over the years with people sitting outside of the obs cars?

I was standing on the platform of a UP business car many years ago when someone threw a rock at the train.  It hit the side of the business car just inches behind my head with a loud bang.  That made a believer out of me.

UP discouraged riding on platforms after that.  Among other steps the DC&H crews were instructed to notify the bosses of any employees who violated the safety policy of not riding on the open platforms of business cars.
