Freight train fire in Seattle
Author: NPRocky

Some excitement in Seattle this morning.  BNSF locomotive 7136 on a freight train passing King Street Station had a generator fire, causing a full Seattle Fire Department response.  It happened next to the King Street Station platform tracks just south of the station building and the tunnel under downtown Seattle.  Some incoming south line Sounder trains were held briefly south of the station.  The fire was just three tracks over from the cabbage car of Amtrak Cascades train 503 to Eugene.  It's departure was delayed 38 minutes.  There's a picture on the KOMO TV News Web site.

That's the Dynamic Brake Cab they have opened up. The Alternator is more towards the rear.

As a firefighter and railroader, that pic scares the snot outta me. Right below that dynamic brake cab you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a “Danger-High Voltage” sign!

And if the engine is shut down there is no "High Voltage" being produced.

Unless it is an AC traction unit, which has those huge capacitors that can hold their "charge" for a VERY long time.
