Amtrak Locomotive 450 Question
Author: WichitaJct

I have seen the Amtrak 450 referred to as a model F59PH and as a F69PH-AC. Which model is correct? Also, how many units did Amtrak have that were the same model and were they all numbered in the 450+ series? Thanks.

Depends on *which* Amtrak 450 you're talking about.

If it's in blue/silver Amtrak California paint and has three windshields, it's an F59PHI.

If it's either white/red or in Amtrak Phase III paint and has only two windshields, it's an F69PHAC.  It and 451 were experimental EMD-Siemens prototypes for an AC-traction passenger locomotive.

Both are true.

IIRC, 'Surfliner' 451 had a self-immolation problem a while back. 2-3 times IIRC.
Apologies to Ray Bradbury.

Where they ever owned by Amtrak?  I seem to remember them being owned by EMD, and returned after the demo with Amtrak ended.  They were later used to power the Siemens ICE tour of the US.

They wound up at National Railway Equipment's Mt Vernon, IL shop many, many years ago.

Weren’t they still there as of not that long ago?  Imagine trying to get OEM support from Progress or Siemens on that product!  Then again, I bet for a big enough check Siemens would have you send them to Cali and they’d rip out the the primitive inverters and install modern gear.

At least one still shows up in aerial views on Google Maps:  https://goo.gl/maps/Zo9quMvPrA3TBxNU7

The F69PH-AC’s were never owned by Amtrak, only leased as test units. They were ultimately sold to National Railway Equipment, all internal components were removed prior to the sale and they were nothing more than empty shells. They have been stored at NRE Mount Vernon since acquired and are among the units slated for scrap as part of the inventory reduction and facility consolidation.
