Alaska RR - Denali to Fairbanks
Author: casco17

Here are some pics from a 9/4/21 trip frpm Denali Park to Fairbanks, AK
This trip was booked through Gray Line Alaska, though the train is Alaska RR equipment.

1. Hines Creek Bridge.  This is just south of the Denali Park station.
2. The northbound train approaches Denali Park station, with 4323 and 4318 for power.
3. We rode the lead bi-level car; note it has forward facing windows and an open deck.

4. A rainbow seen out the forward window
5. An old passenger car as seen in Nenana.  The truss bridge in the right distance is the Mears Memorial Bridge over the Tanana River.
Nenana (town) is at the confluence of the Nenana and Tanana rivers.
6. Nenana depot/museum.

7. Ospreys take up residence in a telegraph line pole.  The poles are actually tripods in this marshy area, and many are still standing long after the wires were removed.
8. This resembles a transfer caboose; Fairbanks yard.
9. Alaska Marine Lines container in Fairbanks yard; I don't recall ever seeing one of these in the lower 48

Thanks for looking

You haven't seen any Alaska Marine Lines containers in the lower 48 because they only run between Seattle and Alaska.
They're a captive pool of equipment.

It's actually a home-built shoving platform known as the "Connaboose". More on it in this thread...

30 odd years ago in late August I stood at Denali station waiting for the train....it was drizzling...windy...and about 38 degrees...and I in a Levi's jacket...and at the time very emaciated....nearly froze to death.
