Uncle Sam greets NJT's "Salute to Military Members and Veterans"
Author: Pattenburg

At Sunday's 40th annual John Basilone Parade in Raritan, NJ, I happened to capture this unique scene. Standing on the sidewalk was "Uncle Sam" awaiting the next unit in the parade. Before that could happen there was a temporary halt to the parade as a westbound passenger train was slowing for a stop at the station. It was a surprise to see what was leading this train, NJT's 4534 featuring a commemorative veterans decal that states "New Jersey Transit Salutes Our Military Members and Veterans". As to who John Basilone was, he was a USMC Gunnery Sergeant that fought in World War II. His actions on Guadalcanal won him the Congressional Medal of Honor.  Basilone would later be killed in action on Iwo Jima.

The Turnpike bridge in New Brunswick is named after John Basilone.
