Rails painted white on Metro North east of Rye
Author: rbenko

On a MN train to New Haven - just east of the Rye, NY station I noticed on the two southbound/westbound tracks each of the rails were painted white all the way up to the top of the rail.   It was like this for about a quarter of a mile.  Pretty interesting looking.  Anyone know what the purpose of this is?

Heat reflective paint to reduce thermal expansion of rails.

Account of Global warming you're likely to see more of this, especially in the southwest. Trouble is the paint hides some types of rail defects.  That is the reason engine and car couplers are never painted.

Interesting - if this is so, why only for a quarter of a mile, and why there?  Is it hotter just east of Rye, NY than it is anywhere else on the NEC??  :-). Is it experimental?

Rye, NY is Metro North's turf, not Amtrak's.

Perhaps an area that gets high sun exposure?  Or where the track structure is particularly susceptible to kinks?

How long is it going to stay white on a railroad?

I heard something on the radio the other day and also saw it on the Internet:   reportedly, scientists at Purdue University have come up with a white paint that is so white that it reflects about 98% of light. That translates to a significant savings in energy use if painted on a building, etc.
