Passenger Trains > Amtrak #6 zipping between Tunnels 23 and 24 1989Date: 10/18/21 05:23 Amtrak #6 zipping between Tunnels 23 and 24 1989 Author: gonx Amtrak #6 exits Tunnel #23 and enters #24 near Applegate CA on the uphill eastbound #2 track.
Abandoned Tunnel 0 (on downhill #1 track) is visible. It was created to bypass a Central Pacific era trestle, but then later abandoned during WW II because of tight clearance. Today the track goes around the tunnel. May 1989 Thanks for looking -Lee Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/18/21 10:47 by gonx. You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! Nice green grass too! That should narrow down the date to a week or so. I found it helps to have secure footing when shooting near Tunnel 23- the trains push a surprising bit of air in front of them! Date: 10/18/21 17:24 Re: Amtrak #6 zipping between Tunnels 23 and 24 1989 Author: gonx I wasn't aware of air push. I am glad that I didn't get out on the top of that portal.
I was always surprised of how quickly eastbounds (during the thumping sd40 and sd45 era) could sneak up at that location. Of course downhill trains were equally stealth. I never liked walking the cut on the #1 track over to the flyover tunnel. To make it work with the lens I had at the time (28mm?) I had to lean in at an awkward angle and the air from the approaching Grande loco about knocked me over!

I love your work in the Donner book. So many great sources of inspiration. On the day of this video, it was off and on rain. My "out there" raifan buddy had some nutty ideas (some too insane to share here) about sitting on the tunnel steps/wing walls to #6. As it was we barely heard the talking detector at 127.3 with his hand held radio shack scanner. We were waiting inside of tunnel 0 where some miscreants had burnt an old mattress with other dumped trash. I think there was about 30 seconds to spare. I actually was hoping to catch it exiting tunnel 24 and going into tunnel 25, but it made good time getting to tunnel alley, which is what I call this section of Applegate-Clipper Gap. I remember being pretty soaked walking back to Lake Thedore where we had parked and hiked from.. |
