During my Denver years I used to sometimes try to correlate locations now filled with condos and office buildings and freeway ramps with old track maps. The difference was amazing. This is a really interesting image of the time "in between". Thanks for posting it.

Regardless of whether the train in the photo is a single train or a combined train, Amtrak offered a lot more service/capacity 30 years ago. Later, when the Pioneer split at Denver and went via Wyoming, the second diner ran Chicago-Seattle and had a different menu so you could have some variety if you were a California Zephyr passenger...walk back to the Pioneer diner for the first night out of Chicago.
