And indeed it did come, with a vengeance. During my Denver years I used to sometimes try to correlate locations now filled with condos and office buildings and freeway ramps with old track maps. The difference was amazing. This is a really interesting image of the time "in between". Thanks for posting it.

It's become so common across the country, happened in my city, too! The railroad eats itself to feed the hunger of Wall Street.

The other big difference that struck this non-Denver resident was how much longer the Zephyr was back 30 years ago.

That's because you're looking at the combined California Zephyr, Desert Wind and Pioneer.

Regardless of whether the train in the photo is a single train or a combined train, Amtrak offered a lot more service/capacity 30 years ago.

I think I spy a second dining car on the rear.  I believe these were picked up in Denver during the summer months.

If that's no, 5 that year, 25 and 26 were rerouted through Wyoming later that year, but 5 and 6 were still monsters, sucks Amtrak can't get trains that long anymore!

Best I can tell, the first eleven cars are for Oakland, next two for Seattle, and last three for LA.  Wow!

Later, when the Pioneer split at Denver and went via Wyoming, the second diner ran Chicago-Seattle and had a different menu so you could have some variety if you were a California Zephyr passenger...walk back to the Pioneer diner for the first night out of Chicago.
