Ticket had to be inserted in a machine in order to board. By contrast TriRail did not. An actual live person checked my ticket on my first TriRail trip from W. Palm to MetroTransfer. However on a short journey to the airport, they didn't check. Probably impossible to walk the entire train at each boarding location. So why not solve the problem with ticket barriers if not to board the train, at least to exit. Seems to work quite well in many U.K. stations. Make the barriers impassable without ticket insert. One guard would be needed at each station to facilitate exit of pass riders and report criminal activities.
