Amtrak #5 ~ 9.5 hrs Late, Makes rare, Daylight Appearance
Author: OmahaTom

Usually the westbound Zephyr climbs the side hill on its way west out of Omaha and passed Martha St here around midnight, on its way to The Rockies and Denver around Sunrise, but yesterday, June 15th, it rolled west out of Omaha at 9:45 am. Anybody know what the hold up was all about yesterday? I know it sat at the Omaha platform for several hours before finally departing.

the equipment was probably from a late 6 and had to wait for a rested crew?

Sat at the station waiting for a disabled freight to get moving. On top of it's four hour late start from Chicago acct the last minute bad order diner.

A disabled freight sucks, but waiting until the train is about ready to go out of Chicago and has to swap cars instead of fixing a problem which should've happened in the yards, that's worse!

Agreed. Sometimes it's easily fixed: I was on a run of the Lake Shore from Chicago some 35 years ago when a call went out from the diner that they had no water. Catastrophe was averted when it was discovered that whoever had last refilled the tank had left the valve handle in the wrong position. But really!
