I can't believe how short the Sunset's consist is these days too. Combined west of San Antonio the Sunset used to have - back in the day:

IS Amtrak getting ANY Superliner cars that they sidelined (mothballed) back into service? 

I realize no one knew what to think at one point as COVID hit and played out, but in terms of mechanical and craft forces - that cut was just way to deep and good institutional knowledge was lost along the way. More of those folks need to be hired in order to truly get capacity back out in the system. That's great that the Cardinal ferried some cars up to Chicago recently, but a LOT more are needed.
