Missouri River Runners on July 29
Author: livesteamer

As of 12:49PM (CDT), Amtrak's Track a Train link is currently showing both the east and the west morning River Runners stopped...westbound is near Sedalia and the eastbound is west of Warraneburg.  Any idea what's going on?  Is there an issue on the UP's Sedalia sub between Sedalia nad Warrensburg?  I live near the Sedalia Sub and I have heard no freight trains since early this morning.

Both trains are in service eruption. All the fanfare of adding the second train gets lost in the smoke of a "regular" day at Amtrak.

Westbound just rolled through Knob Noster at 129pm. Showing 44 mph

This was reported on the Missouri Railfans and Railroads Facebook page. "UP freight near Strasburg lost a drawbar on the single track."

Thought it had to be something with a freight. Eastbound River Runner must be holding at P-Hill

On time performance on the St. Louis - Kansas City "corridor" is near zero.  I don't think the UP even makes any pretense of trying and Amtrak doesn't care.

As we see from the UP second quarter results (below) just issued on July 21st, performance numbers the operating ratio are on the slide but profits still improve. Looks like there's more to squeeze out of that turnip! Looks like today some Red, Silver and Blue got squeezed out.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/nebraska/articles/2022-07-21/union-pacific-profit-up-as-railroad-delivery-delays-reduced

Union Pacific's second-quarter profit improved a bit, but the railroad's expenses jumped as it tried to reduce the delivery delays that have left its customers waiting for trains at times.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad said Thursday that its profit grew 2% to $1.84 billion, or $2.93 per share, in the quarter. That's up slightly from last year's $1.8 billion, or $2.72 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations even though Union Pacific's performance disappointed with two key performance measures — the speed of its freight cars and locomotive productivity — down 12%. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.82 per share.

The soaring price of diesel also weighed on the results although fuel surcharges and rate increases helped offset that. The railroad said its revenue grew 14% to $6.27 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $6.11 billion. But expenses were up 25% at $3.8 billion.

I wonder if anyone at Amtrak is awake enough to realize they will need to recrew 318.  I estimate a 6 am Chicago arrival, if it gets that far...the UP also dispatches St. Louis to Chicago and does a poor job.  Perfectly Shoody Railroading at its best.

318 is showing near 6.5 hours late into STL and 316 is already listed as about 1.5 hours late

And, some more frosting on an ugly cake...319 is nearly five hours late westbound.

Given the terrible performance you have to wonder why Missouri gave these clowns more money. Hate to say it, but the Indiana governor was right to tell them to get lost.

They didn't give anyone money, basically they were paying back Amtrak after having their debt forgiven by them. Isn't a commuter train anyways, just serves the party folks of Hermann going to the wineries or riding the Katy Trail on weekends. Train is so bad on October weekends with drunkeness, Amtrak has cops onboard. Hard to do work back in the business class, I just drive now. Should've stayed 318/319.

And the Indiana governor is a waste of space. Tons of trucks clog the highways he won't make 3 lanes and he lost getting the Super Bowl in Indianapolis forever from the lack of light rail with the no money for passenger trains in Marion County nonsense.

Your post doesn’t make much sense. First of all Amtrak may have forgiven some of Missouri’s debt to them but Missouri is still subsidizing the crappy operation going forward. Since it’s hours late most of the trips why should anybody subsidize it?

As for our truck clogged highways in Indiana I guess you think the governor has a magic wand and can suddenly widen all of them overnight? And we don’t need a light rail pork project. Our rapid transit electric bus is running about one third projected ridership. We don’t need to waste money building transit nobody wants to use.

It sure makes sense to me but then again I don't have a tech based job that prevents me from having common sense. Instead of the second train in Missouri, they should've just paid back the money that Amtrak helped them out with. One train is enough, but at least they didn't go to a scam artist company like Iowa Pacific to run a passenger train.
Do you live in a bubble (subdivision) and don't see the highways have been clogged for years out here in Indiana, especially I-65? So if they don't want to use public transit, then they got to expand lanes on the highway for folks to drive. See that is called common sense. So the govenors have had time in Indiana, just too busy sitting sidways on that magic wand.
