Passenger Trains > White Pass and Yukon DerailmentDate: 07/30/22 21:34 White Pass and Yukon Derailment Author: INTLRAILTRAVELLER Very little information on this but apparently the WP&Y Summit train derailed at Glacier Station around 1240 this afternoon. No injuries and all passengers were transported back to Skagway on another train to continue their cruises or other tours
No word at all on cause or damages. Posted from Android Date: 07/31/22 11:38 Re: White Pass and Yukon Derailment Author: ts1457 Here's a news article:
Train derailment caused by switch problem: White Pass and Yukon Route | CBC News A switch failure in an old style switch. Looks like it could have been worse from the picture in the article. edit: Sorry I missed the date by eight years. I am curious about the current incident. Edited 1 time(s). Date: 07/31/22 11:43 Re: White Pass and Yukon Derailment Author: exrtc From a 1941 train sheet, Glacier Station is mile 14.1 from Skagway on an ascending grade northbound. Just beyond the north switch, the track enters a horseshoe curve that crosses the east fork of the Skaguay River.

I need to be more careful about dates on internet searches. Those poor passengers never did make it to the top... but it is very foggy up here now. They grabbed the cars on onto a southbound train and left the engine... it was retailed by the time we got there and they were working on the track. By the time we got back to the area the locomotive was on gone.

I've always wanted to go up there, but now I've lost the desire. They might as well replace the cars from Siemens to go with those homely units. Glad no one was hurt. Well management probaby upset that their ugly duckling bit the ballast. Thanks Ducky. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/31/22 14:43 by TomG. Problem solved.

These large diesels must be considered very good to make all these months of service without a problem. I would not say they are too heavy for the railroad.

Which is a better record than the old engines. Posted from Android Date: 07/31/22 16:22 Re: White Pass and Yukon Derailment Author: goneon66 Lackawanna484 Wrote:
