Best explanation I've read is that Amtrak made a change in the wheel turning process, which altered wheel profiles just enough to reduce conductivity needed to activate the crossing circuits. I don't know if that's true, but seems plausible as both the IC/CN and UP have imposed the consist restrictions. Author: 2904 The issue has been a problem since the early 2000s when sophisticated grade crossing prediction technology was put into place, this is a common problem on the UP and BNSF too. Axle restrictions exist in many places in the country now and always have for light power. The wheel profile has nothing to do with it, many profiles have been tested and all of them result in loss of shunt over a certain speed.
