Hoboken Terminal At Night In B&W
Author: sig292

Over the years I have taken some night shots at Hoboken terminal, both in color and black & white.
Here are a few of my favorite B&W photos.

Photo 2: Ticket window in 1980 before Eire-Lackawanna lettering was removed.

I have always had a soft spot for b&w.  I have been in the NYC area a half dozen or so times but never made it to Hoboken.  Next time for sure.  What a beautiful  place!

#2 brings back lots of memories of the late 70's/early 80's. I commuted to college thru Hoboken Terminal every day for 4 years. Pretty sure I never took a picture of the ticket windows (guess I got smarter once I completed college and no longer commuting)...  Had plenty of chances, buying the monthly student pass there. DOH

Spent a lot of time in the waiting room (or upstairs in the DS office), waiting for my ride home.

As a fellow practitioner of the "tripod ~ available light ~ night time" side of this hobby I give you a very energetic 2 thumbs-up!! WAY up. And as was mentioned already, I think the components making up the composition in your image #6 are fantastic. Your combination of shine & shadow is a work of art! In my 11+ years aboard TO.com I've never seen anyone get an IOTD 2 days in a row. You should be the first, and image #6 should be tomorrow's IOTD! Seriously... :^)

Thanks everyone for the kind words and I am glad the photos brought back some fond memories. Color night photos can end up having very harsh and unnatural light color shifts. In monochrome the highlights and shadows are what make for an interesting image while in color, they sometimes work against each other.
Thanks Todd for the IO TD!
One more...
Somehow I never took a Hoboken night photo with the World Trade Center in it. In 2002 I did photograph the ferry terminal area with New York's "Tribute In Light" beaming into an overcast sky.

Wow! Great photos. I played around with B&W for a while and you can get dramatic results. But I kept shooting color film until digital arrived.

Good thread, thank you for posting these pictures.

One of my memories of Hoboken Terminal was waiting for the late night train home, and seeing dozens of tiny blue propane flames at the switch heaters on the ladder tracks into the station. Like little candles out in the darkness.
